Principles of Person-Centered Care Planning (PCCP) applied to using the Managed Intervention Plan (MIP). When participants in Maryland’s Public Behavioral Health System Residential Rehabilitation Program services are at risk of losing their placement, policy calls for the development of a Managed Intervention Plan. The intent of developing this intervention plan is to provide a coaching experience for consumers so that they can be successful in their time with our programs, instead of having to be discharged for rule violations/code of conduct. This training will cover how to engage with consumers to explore with what the alternatives are, how they can best help, and what strategies need to be implemented in order to retain the individual in services. The result of this engaging process should be a comprehensive and actionable written plan to prevent discharge from services. (Training Time: 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm)
Agenda:
- Introductions to PCCP
- How is MIP different from and similar to a Recovery Plan?
- Setting yourself up for success engaging consumers in plan development
- Collaborating for meaningful and useful of the MIP
- Considerations for MIP Objectives and Interventions
- Case-study review and brainstorming

A case for replacing compliance with Engagement (Training Time: 9:30 am - 12:00 pm) As behavioral health services and supports have evolved, one of our most powerful lessons learned is that pressuring “compliance” or “treatment adherence” does not work. We cannot force people into health and wellness. Taking pills and/or attending appointments is not sufficient for achieving wellness. Words like compliance, adherence, and attendance persist in interactions and in documentation. At the same time, problems with disengagement and dropout persist. Research on person-centered care supports shifts to language and approaches that are more empowering and engaging. In this training we will identify common pitfalls and strategies for being more engaging and empowering including effective listening, collaborative decision making, and matching approaches to stages of change.
Agenda:
- Recognizing common pitfalls - how and when do we get in our own way
- Facilitating engagement in behavioral health services
- Keeping the consumer in the driver's seat
- Stages of Change theory applied to planning and treatment

CTI is a time-limited evidence-based practice providing specialized case management interventions to society's most vulnerable individuals during periods of transition. PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND BOTH SESSIONS (Training time: 9:30 am - 12:00 pm)
Critical Time Intervention (CTI) is a time-limited evidence-based practice providing specialized case management interventions to society’s most vulnerable individuals during periods of transition. To facilitate community integration and continuity of care, the CTI model blends the delivery of intensive supports that meet immediate client needs with assistance aimed at facilitating long-term community integration and continuity of care. For more information, see the resources listed at: https://ebpcenter.umaryland.ed...
Target Audience: Community-based providers of services that include case-management functions that fall under the umbrella of psychiatric rehabilitation i.e. services that help people navigate behavioral health symptoms and the impacts of those symptoms on their ability to meet their basic needs and navigate significant life transitions. These transitions may include moving from homelessness to housed or to community-based services from more structured setting (hospitals, incarceration, residential rehabilitation settings, recovery residences, or other inpatient treatment).
Scope of Training: This training is designed to give providers a basic introduction to CTI and ideas for implementing lessons learned from this Evidence-Based Practice into their work. Objectives include:
- Identifying how major life transitions can put individuals living with behavioral health concerns at increased risk and how providers can partner with individuals to proactively plan for transitions to avoid common risks and pitfalls
- Strategic planning and prioritizing of individuals’ goals to meet immediate needs and set up support systems for work on long-term goals
- Planning beyond services with your program – what they might work on with you and where they might be when they graduate from your services
- Skills-development practices for increasing practices that support health and wellness and get basic needs met
- Note: This training provides an overview and orientation to CTI-informed practice that may improve outcomes for community-based providers. Full implementation of the CTI model involves ongoing training and consultation that goes beyond the scope of this series and is only available to programs pre-approved by the Behavioral Health Administration under select contracts and service types.
